How to build a monthly budget as a couple

  1. Choose one month and one currency. Add each partner’s income separately. Decide whether you are tracking your whole household or only shared costs, and use that scope throughout.
  2. Enter your plan. Expand the relevant categories and fill in the Planned column for rent, bills, groceries, transport and savings. Leave categories you do not use blank.
  3. Add what actually happened. Enter money received and payments made in the Actual column. Until you enter them, actual amounts count as zero; they are not estimates of your spending.
  4. Review the comparison together. Check planned and actual totals near the bottom of the calculator. Savings are included in outflows, so do not subtract them again from money remaining.
  5. Keep a copy. Download the PDF before leaving this page. Your entries are cleared when you leave or reload.

If you enter take-home pay, leave payroll deductions that have already reduced that pay out of the expense rows. Count each payment once.

A simple couples budget example

Suppose your combined monthly income is $6,000. This illustration shows how the calculator treats spending and savings; it is not a suggested spending target.

One month, in US dollars
ItemAmount
Partner A income$3,500
Partner B income$2,500
Rent$1,800
Groceries$600
All other spending$1,800
Savings contributions$600
Total outflows, including savings$4,800
Money remaining$1,200

The calculation is $6,000 − $4,200 in spending − $600 in savings = $1,200 remaining. In your own budget, break “all other spending” into its actual categories. Do not enter the total outflows as an extra expense.

Questions about the couples budget calculator

Does it work if we keep separate bank accounts?

Yes. The calculator combines the amounts you enter; it does not connect to bank accounts. Agree which income and costs to include, then enter those amounts once.

Can it split bills according to our incomes?

It calculates household totals and planned versus actual amounts, but does not assign each partner a share. Use our proportional bill-splitting formula and worked example to agree contributions separately.

Why does the summary show zero when I have entered a plan?

The top summary shows actual amounts. Planned amounts appear alongside actuals in the monthly budget comparison below the categories. Fill in the Actual column as money comes in and payments are made.

Can I return to this budget next month?

There is no saved account or automatic carry-over. Download the PDF as your record, then enter the next month’s amounts when you return.
